Promoting Farming and Consumption of Iron-Rich Beans to Fight Malnutrition in Karamoja Region

Karamoja region, Northeast Uganda, experiences high rates of malnutrition partly driven by limited knowledge of production and consumption of nutritious foods among mothers, caregivers of children and young people.
The National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO), under the USAID funded Agricultural Research Activity tasked WEKOnnect to develop communication messages and materials to launch and motivate the growing and consumption of iron-rich beans in the region.
Working closely with community stakeholders, we executed the following activities; a Co-creation workshop, campaign development, stakeholder engagements, materials development (drama scripts, talking points, posters, jingle), materials pretest, locally produced campaign theme song, community theater/drama, community outreach activations, 21 school activations, and community dialogues/debates.
