Facilitating Youth to Use Music, Dance, and Drama to Address Female Genital Mutilation

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) remains a deeply entrenched, yet harmful practice in many communities, with rates exceeding 50% in some sub-counties of Karamoja and Sebei (UBOS & UNICEF, 2020).

UNICEF Uganda tasked WEKOnnect to recruit and train 20 Youth Groups in the use of Music, Dance and Drama as a Social and Behavior Change tool to shift negative norms that uphold this practice.

We conducted a social norms diagnostic study using vignettes, 2 Cocreation workshops in Sebei & Karamoja regions, developed a training manual for the drama groups, held 12 training sessions with them, facilitated 40 community performances, engaged district leaders in 6 districts, compiled a music album, established a community of practice, progressively monitored and evaluated activities, empowered drama groups to explore MDD as a business, and oversaw documentation of activities (photography & videography).
